Ilmarinen Coast Defence Ship From Finnish national epic, Kalevala. Ilmarinen is one of the main characters. Older tradition represents him as a deity, who was the ruler of peace and the weather. Younger tradition represents him as a cultural hero, a smith who forged the firmaments. llmarinen is a derivative of the word ilma, meaning weather or air.
Uusimaa Gunboat A traditional name dating back to af Chapman's ships of the 18th century. Uusimaa is the province on the middle of north coast of Gulf of Finland. Next time the name was used for a "Riga" class frigate purchased in 1964 and scrapped in 1980´s. Today Uusimaa is a 1993 built minelayer.
Hämeenmaa Gunboat A traditional name dating back to af Chapman's ships of the 18th century. Hämeenmaa (Häme) is the province north from Uusimaa. Next time the name was used for a "Riga" class frigate purchased in 1964 and scrapped in 1980´s. Today Hämeenmaa is a 1993 built minelayer.
Turunmaa Gunboat A traditional name dating back to af Chapman's ships of the 18th century. Turunmaa is the province around Turku in southwest Finland. Next time the name was used for a Finnish built corvette. Built in 1968 and now taken out of active service.
Karjala Gunboat Karjala (Karelia) is the much-fought area north and south from Lake Ladoga. Next time the name was used for a Finnish built corvette. Built in 1968 and now taken out of active service.
Klas Horn Gunboat Klas Kristersson Horn was a Swedish admiral of Finnish origin. He was born around 1518 in Åminne. During the 7-years war between Denmark and Sweden 1563-1570, he won a decisive victory over Danish fleet 7th July 1565 and 26. July 1566 he won a combibed Danish-lübeck fleet near Öland. He died 9th September the same year.
Matti Kurki Gunboat Matti Kurki (Matts Kurck) is the first known Finnish hero from end of 13th century. He was a tribal leader in Satakunta. One day he had a duel with a giant from Novgorod named Pohto. Pohto wounded Matti Kurki's leg and then mocked that "You jump like a stork". Pohto slashed also Matti Kurki's right arm (or more likely some fingers), but Matti Kurki beheaded then Pohto. Kurki (subs.) = stork Matti Kurki was later used for the training ship Porlock Bay, built by Charles Hill & Sons 1944-46 and purchased 1962.
Ruotsinsalmi Minelayer Ruotsinsalmi is a sound off Kotka. Place of two large naval battles in 1789 and 1790. Russia won the first one and Sweden the second one. The day of the second battle 9. July is the Day of Finnish Navy.
Riilahti Minelayer Place of a naval battle in 1714. In Russian literature this battle is called Gangut.

Sisu is the one of the few names that were used for two ships at the same time. The other one was depot ship / ice breaker. After Hurja was stricken the name was used for one of the "Baglietto" classes. Hurja was also name of a prototype of fast attack craft in 1970's.

Louhi Minelayer From Finnish national epic, Kalevala. Louhi is one of the main characters, witch and female leader of the north country. It is joked that Louhi got its name from the rolling and smoke belching. After the war icebreaker / depot ship Sisu was renamed Louhi.
