The following list gives links to pages and pictures that help to identify different vessels and estimate date the pictures are taken:
The survival of the vessels in confined sea areas was dependent on their camouflage. The ships were often anchored close to the shore and disguised for example as part of an island. By using various color schemes it was tried to break the outlines of the vessel and in addition they were covered with nets and trees. These galleries show some vessel camouflage systems and on some pictures there are also comments on the system.
The exact colours of the ships varied. Before the wars the colors were simply grey, black and white on topside and red lead for underwater areas. The Navy material specifications (Suomen Laivaston ainesmääräykset 30.3.1931) for the paints were:
Camouflage systems used in Continuation War.
The loss of the old torpedo boat S 2 was a shock for the whole country. The boat was one of three left in service. During the fall excercises in 1925 the boat was lost with all hands in a heavy storm off Pori. 53 men lost their lives. The boat had fighted whole night and half of the day in the heavy seas and almost reached safety. It is assumed that close to the shore the sea was so heavy that the boat had no more power to steer. Perhaps the coal had been used up or the crew was totally exhausted. The sister ship S 1 reached safety one hour later having coal only for 12 minutes consumption left.
The Baltic Sea is the largest body of brackish (low-salinity) water in the world. The many rivers are reason for brackish character. The Baltic Sea is inland sea that is open to the oceans only through the sounds; The Sound, Great Belt and Little Belt. The Baltic Sea consists of the main basin and two long gulfs extending to north and east. The gulfs are separated from the basin by narrows.
The average depth of Baltic Sea is around 100-150 m, but the gulf areas are much more shallow. There is no tide, but winds and changes in barometric pressure can cause strong currents.
Another special factor in the Baltic is the ice cover that will affect sailing in the gulfs and along the coasts 3 to 7 months every year. Usually the center of the main basin remains free from ice. The ice conditions did favor Finnish and German Navies in WW II as the ice formation in Gulf of Finland begins from the end of the Gulf, i.e., Leningrad and Kronstadt. These are also the last areas that become free from ice during springs. In 1942-1944 Finnish and German Navies had time to prepare the antisubmarine barrages and nets before Soviet submarines had possibility to sail out.

Photos are from the collection of my late grandfather Lt. Tauno Johannes Paukku. Born 1908 he joined the navy in 1927 after his military service as a conscript. He served in hydrographic surveying department, motor torpedo boats, but spent most of his career in the submarines. He graduated from the first submarine personnel course 1929, became a commissioned officer in 1943, served a short time as submarine commander and became finally commander of the Submarine Flotilla and he was in charge of decommissioning of the boats. |
